A guide to choosing a mountain bike
Choose a mountain bike according to the terrain. Rough-surface outings and technical descents have different demands. When comparing hardtails and full-suspension bikes, consider the manufacturer's intended use, maintenance needs and frame geometry together; having suspension does not make a bike suitable for every trail.
The Bisan, Bianchi, Salcano and Carraro examples in the collection have different gearing and brake systems. Read specifications for the relevant size and model year.
- Compare frame size through handlebar reach and standing clearance as well as saddle height.
- Assess tyre tread, width and wheel size against the terrain and the frame's available clearance.
- Examine brake type and suspension adjustments; similar-looking models can have different maintenance needs.
Are 29-inch wheels suitable for everyone?
Wheel size alone does not determine suitability. Consider frame geometry, size and how comfortably the rider controls the bike.
Is the number of gears more important?
Not on its own. A gear range suited to your route and ease of use offer a more useful comparison.
