Distinguish inner wire from outer housing
The inner wire transmits movement; housing supports its route. Brake and gear housing should not be assumed to have identical construction. Identify the part's function, then examine lever attachment and frame routing. For housing sold by the metre, distinguish purchased quantity from required cut lengths. Checking exposed wire sections and housing runs separately helps define maintenance needs without unnecessary material.
- Confirm brake or gear use in the description.
- Check wire head, housing diameter and ferrules.
- Determine the length needed for routing without tension as the handlebar turns.
Are wire and cable the same product?
These everyday names can overlap. Check photos and contents to establish whether the product is an inner wire, housing or set.
Does a new wire require adjustment?
Yes. Check the relevant system's operation. Adjust braking or shifting properly and complete ends and attachments according to manufacturer instructions.
