Determining dimensions for a wheel build
Rim size in inches alone does not determine spoke length. Account for the rim's effective rim diameter, hub flange dimensions and lacing pattern. Different lengths may be needed on front and rear wheels, or on opposite sides of one wheel. For replacement, an undamaged equivalent spoke provides a useful measurement; for a new build, calculate using every component. If the rim or hub has changed, recalculate from the new dimensions instead of copying the old length.
- Match spoke gauge to nipple threads.
- Check whether nipples are included.
- Compare individual, multipack and gross quantities.
Do all wheels of the same diameter use the same spokes?
No. Changes in hub and rim geometry can change required length. Do not order by wheel diameter alone.
Does replacing one spoke require adjustment?
Check wheel trueness and balanced spoke tension. Assessing why a spoke is missing or loose provides more thorough maintenance than simply replacing the broken part.
